What Is OEE and Why Does It Matter?

OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) is a manufacturing KPI that measures how effectively a machine or production line is being used compared to its full potential.

The formula is: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality

  • Availability — Are you losing time to breakdowns and changeovers?
  • Performance — Are you running slower than you should be?
  • Quality — Are you producing defects that need rework or scrapping?

A score of 85%+ is considered world class. Most plants sit between 40–60% — which means significant untapped capacity is hiding in your process.
