The maximum probability of a false positive you are willing to accept before declaring a result statistically significant, usually set at 0.05 (5%). If the p-value falls below alpha, the observed difference is considered unlikely to be pure chance.
In plain English: Comparing the averages of three or more groups at once.
Analysis of Variance tests whether the means of three or more groups differ more than random variation would explain. It generalises the t-test to multiple groups and is common in the Analyse phase when comparing processes, sites or shifts.

A visual alert system that lets any worker stop or flag a process the instant an abnormality appears, typically using a light stack or board. It moves problems from silent suffering to immediate, visible response.

A tool for organising a large number of brainstormed ideas, customer comments or issues into natural groupings, so patterns and priorities emerge from noise. Often used after divergent thinking to make sense of the output.

Also called a fishbone or Ishikawa diagram, this tool arranges candidate causes of a problem under categories such as people, method, machine, material, measurement and environment, so a team can hunt root causes systematically instead of guessing.

A senior manager who selects projects, secures resources, removes organisational blockers and owns the business result. Champions rarely run the day-to-day analysis but projects rarely succeed without them.

The routine, predictable variation that exists in any stable process. Reacting to it by tweaking settings adds more variation, not less — improvement means changing the process itself, not chasing individual data points.

A range that is likely to contain the true population value, usually stated at 95% confidence. It tells you how precise your sample-based estimate actually is — a proportion of 82% with a wide interval deserves far less confidence than a tight one.

Failure Mode and Effects Analysis lists the ways a process or design can fail, scores each by severity, occurrence and detection, and prioritises the highest risks for prevention. It is proactive risk management rather than firefighting.
In plain English: The share of units that come out right first time, no rework.
The percentage of units that pass through a step correctly the first time with no rework or repair. A process can look fine while hiding enormous rework loops, which is why first-pass yield is tracked alongside simple output numbers.

A horizontal bar chart mapping project tasks against a calendar, showing start, duration, dependencies and overlap. In DMAIC it keeps the team honest about sequencing and deadlines.

A Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility study measures how much of your observed variation comes from the measurement system itself — the same person measuring twice, different people, or the instrument. Bad measurement data poisons every analysis built on it.

A visual pull system in which work is only started when a signal (card, slot or digital board) shows capacity is free. It caps work in process, exposes bottlenecks and keeps flow steady.
In plain English: The small set of numbers that tell you if you are winning.
Key Performance Indicators are the vital few metrics, tied to strategy, that indicate whether a process or business is performing as intended. Good KPIs are few, owned and acted on when they drift.
In plain English: The total elapsed time from order to delivery.
The full clock time a customer or downstream step experiences from requesting something to receiving it, including all waiting and queues. Lead time is usually dominated by waiting, not by the work itself.

The value that splits an ordered dataset in half, so half the points sit above it and half below. Unlike the mean it resists distortion by outliers, which makes it the honest centre for skewed data like cycle times.

A defined, measured quantity used to track process or business performance. Good metrics have operational definitions so two people measuring the same thing always get the same answer.
In plain English: Proving your data is trustworthy before you analyse it.
The umbrella term for studying how much variation your measurement process adds, through studies like Gage R&R. Analysis performed on unreliable measurement data merely produces confident nonsense.
In plain English: Waste: any activity that burns time or money without adding value.
The Japanese term for waste — activity that consumes resources but creates no value for the customer. Classic Lean identifies eight categories, from defects to unused talent.
In plain English: Unevenness: the lumpy demand that throws everything off balance.
The waste of inconsistency or irregularity in workload, production or quality. Unevenness forces overcapacity, stress and error, and it is usually the parent of both muda and muri.
In plain English: Overburden: asking people or machines for more than is reasonable.
The waste of overburden — pushing systems or people beyond sustainable limits, which damages quality, safety and equipment. Removing muri is as important as removing muda.
In plain English: Work the customer would not pay for if they could see it.
Any activity that consumes time or cost without changing the product or service in a way a customer values. Some NVA is unavoidable (compliance, accounts); the rest is the raw material of improvement.
In plain English: The bell curve: most values cluster in the middle, few at the edges.
The symmetric, bell-shaped probability distribution that many natural and process measurements approximate when only common causes are at work. Much of statistics, including control charts and capability indices, builds on it.
In plain English: The skeptical default: assume nothing changed until data says so.
The starting assumption in hypothesis testing that there is no difference or effect. Evidence (a small p-value) is required to reject it, which keeps random noise from being mistaken for real change.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness multiplies availability, performance and quality to express how much of a machine's planned time produces good output at full speed. An OEE of 60% means four in every ten potential good units never happened.

A clear, exact description of how a metric is measured: what counts, what does not, the start and stop points, and the instrument. Without one, "defect rate" means something different to every person in the room.

Producing ahead of actual demand, the waste Toyota considered the worst because it generates all the others: extra inventory, transport, waiting and hiding of problems. It usually comes from batching habits and forecasts rather than real pull.

The probability of seeing data at least as extreme as yours if the null hypothesis were true. A small p-value (commonly below 0.05) says the observed effect would be surprising without a real difference.

A descending bar chart of causes or categories with a cumulative line on top, revealing which vital few account for most of the effect. It is the standard tool for prioritising where to aim improvement effort.

The observation, named after economist Vilfredo Pareto, that outcomes are usually dominated by a small number of inputs. In improvement it means finding the vital few causes pays better than spreading effort everywhere.

A four-step iterative method for testing changes on a small scale, learning from the result and standardising what worked. DMAIC borrows its discipline for existing processes; PDCA remains the daily engine of kaizen.

A controlled trial of a proposed improvement on a limited scope, used to verify the solution works, measure its effect and catch problems before full rollout. Pilots turn big risky rollouts into small, cheap lessons.

Error-proofing: designing a process or part so the error physically cannot happen or cannot pass unnoticed — the USB plug shape, the SIM card notch, the checklist that will not submit incomplete. Prevention beats detection.

A set of indices comparing the voice of the process (its natural spread) with the voice of the customer (the specification). Cpk accounts for centreing as well as spread; a Cpk below 1.0 means the process will regularly produce defects.
In plain English: The person accountable for the process end to end, forever.
The manager responsible for a process's ongoing performance after the project team disbands — including its control plan and metrics. Without one, improvements decay because nobody's job is protecting them.
In plain English: Drawing the work exactly as it happens, not as the org chart says.
Creating a visual map of the steps, decisions, handoffs and delays in a process, from a high-level SIPOC to a detailed value stream map. You cannot improve what you cannot see.
In plain English: Work flows only when the next step asks for it.
A method of controlling flow in which downstream demand signals upstream production, capping inventory and surfacing problems. Pull replaces schedule-driven "push" and lets real customers set the pace.
In plain English: Making to a forecast and pushing it downstream, ready or not.
The opposite of pull: central planning pushes work into the process regardless of actual downstream need, creating inventory, queues and the classic "why is that pile there?" problem.
In plain English: Naming who does the work, who decides and who just needs to know.
A responsibility matrix recording for each task who is Responsible, Accountable, Consulted and Informed. It prevents both duplicated effort and tasks everyone assumed were somebody else's.

A statistical method that models the relationship between inputs and an output, quantifying how much each factor matters and enabling prediction. In Analyse it turns correlation guesses into an equation you can challenge.

The underlying cause which, if removed, stops the problem recurring, as opposed to symptoms or contributing factors. DMAIC teams are judged on whether they found and fixed root causes, not on how much effort they expended.

The probability that a unit passes through all steps of a process without a single defect or rework, found by multiplying each step's yield. It exposes how step yields that look acceptable multiply into a lousy overall outcome.
In plain English: Time-ordered dots that show whether things are drifting.
A simple line chart of a metric over time, in the order produced. Without control limits it cannot separate signal from noise, but it reveals trends, shifts and cycles at a glance.
In plain English: The FMEA score that ranks which failure to fix first.
In FMEA, the product of Severity, Occurrence and Detection scores (each 1-10) for a failure mode. High-RPN items get preventive action first; the number itself is a prioritisation guide, not a truth.
In plain English: How many data points you need before your conclusion is safe.
The number of observations required to detect an effect of a given size with acceptable confidence. Too small and real changes go unnoticed; far larger than needed and you waste time collecting.

A chart plotting paired data points to reveal the relationship between two variables — strength, direction and shape. It is the honest first look before any correlation or regression claim is made.
In plain English: Your defect rate expressed as "how many sigmas fit before the spec".
A scale of process performance where higher sigma means fewer defects: 3 sigma is about 66,800 DPMO, 4 sigma 6,210, and the famous 6 sigma just 3.4. It lets wildly different processes be compared on one ruler.

Single-Minute Exchange of Die: the method for slashing changeover and setup times by separating internal from external tasks, converting internal to external, and streamlining what remains. Short changeovers make small batches economic.

Statistical Process Control: monitoring a process over time with control charts so action is taken on evidence of change, not on noise. It stops both the over-reaction to normal variation and the missing of real signals.

Variation caused by identifiable, non-random factors: a new operator, a faulty batch, a mis-set machine. Control charts flag it immediately, and unlike common-cause noise it should be investigated and removed.
