What Does DMAIC Stand For?

DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyse, Improve, Control — a five-phase structured method for solving business problems and improving processes.

It was developed as part of Six Sigma methodology in the 1980s and has since become the most widely used process improvement framework in the world, from manufacturing to healthcare to financial services.

  • Define — What is the problem and what does success look like?
  • Measure — How bad is it right now? Gather baseline data.
  • Analyse — Why is it happening? Find root causes.
  • Improve — What can we do about it? Test solutions.
  • Control — How do we stop it reverting? Sustain the gains.

When Should You Use DMAIC?

DMAIC is the right tool when you have a recurring problem that you don't fully understand the cause of yet. If you already know the solution, you don't need DMAIC — you just need an action plan.

Use DMAIC when:

  • The problem keeps coming back despite previous fixes
  • You need data to justify a decision or investment
  • Stakeholders need to see a structured, evidenced approach
  • The issue crosses multiple departments or processes

How to Run Your First DMAIC Project

You don't need to be a Black Belt to run a DMAIC project. Start small — pick a process you know well and a problem you can measure.

  • Start with a clear problem statement (not a solution statement)
  • Collect at least 2–4 weeks of baseline data before jumping to solutions
  • Use a fishbone diagram in the Analyse phase to identify root causes
  • Pilot your solution before full rollout
  • Create a control plan to sustain results

SimplicityHub has free templates for every stage of DMAIC — from project charter to control plan.
